Biography

For Meleah Backhaus Shrout, piano is passion. Starting her studies in piano as a child, music has always been a form of self-expression. Meleah holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Youngstown State University in Piano Performance, and a Master’s of Music Degree from The University of Akron in Collaborative Piano.

Meleah has been teaching private piano lessons since 1999, and her students range from children to the adult/collegiate level, with a particular interest in children who have tested on the spectrum for Autism. Currently serving as the secretary for the Music Teacher’s Association of Southern Maryland, she is also a member of the Music Teachers Association of Charles County, and the Music Teachers National Association.

Meleah composes her own works as well, and audiences speak of her original piano music as ‘moving,’ ‘inspirational,’ and ‘touching.’

As a collaborator, Meleah enjoys working with both soloists and choral groups in the area.  Her long term commitments include serving as the church accompanist for Hughesville Baptist Church where she plays the weekly service and works with the choir.  As the lead accompanist for St Maries Choral Arts, Meleah rehearses and performs with St. Maries Musica throughout their performance season each semester.

Meleah believes anyone can make music, that piano is one of the best instruments with which to begin a musical journey, and is happy to share her own journey with you.
